Who was Maria Montessori?

Maria Montessori, the first female doctor in Italy, was also one of the great pioneers of child development. After graduating from Rome University Medical School in 1896, she worked with mentally deficient children, reflecting both her compassion and her rigorous scientific ability. She became a lecturer at Rome University, laying the foundation of scientific pedagogy in Italy.

In 1908, Dr. Montessori began extending her innovative techniques with a group of impoverished children in San Lorenzo, Rome. Within a year, the children had advanced so remarkably that Montessori earned worldwide acclaim. Since then, she has written 25 books on the various aspects of her theory and practice. Montessori schools have been established in over 50 countries.

The Quincy Montessori curriculum is heavily based on the original precepts of Dr. Montessoris principles. Like most Montessori, we offer three year programs, beginning around age 3.

The
Montessori Philosophy

The philosophical foundation of the Montessori approach is based on the premise that education should develop physical, intellectual, and spiritual/emotional powers to the fullest. To do so, children must have freedom - freedom to be achieved through order and self-discipline. Montessori respects each ones unique personality, and trusts in their potential to achieve.
